Resolve to Protect Your Home in the New Year
Need an idea for a new year’s resolution? This may be the year to set one that protects your home and family. During the holidays, you probably received all sorts of high-priced items. Whether it was a flat-screen TV, new KitchenAid mixer, or jewelry, you’re at risk. During and after the holidays, there is a significant spike in burglaries because intruders know you’ve just raked in a bunch of brand-new items that could sell for top dollar online- and they will not hesitate to take them all. So, what is exactly can you do? Follow these steps, and you’ll be sure to have a happy new year.
- Always Lock Up Around 30% of break-ins occur through an unlocked window or door. After reading this, check your door and window locks for function. If you notice a lock may be leaving you vulnerable, get it fixed immediately. Once you’ve done this, set a date every few months or so to periodically check them.
- Install Home Security Systems Burglars typically only enter homes when they look like easy targets. A report done by the UNC Charlotte shows that most burglars were deterred from a house by the presence of increased security such as signs of an alarm, dogs, or security cameras. Half of those interviewed also said the sound of an alarm would halt their intrusion and send them running.
- Make Sure Valuables are Not Visible From Windows One of the best ways to keep your house safe is to make it look undesirable. Don’t position any valuables in direct view of a window and draw your blinds or curtains when possible. If you’re not sure of visibility, walk your property from the outside-in looking for potential weak spots, then reposition items as needed. This can also be true of vehicles. Keep any valuables in the trunk and lock your doors to prevent break ins.
- Invest in Home Insurance Even the most prepared home can become subject to burglary. In these cases, insurance is one of your best defenses. Dwelling coverage will handle any damage done to your house such as a kicked in door or broken window. Personal property lines will reimburse you for the valuables you may lose due to burglary. If you already have home insurance, make sure to take an inventory of everything you own or add what you’ve received as gifts. It may seem tedious at first, but it will be worth it if you ever need to make a claim. Keep in mind your computer may be stolen so, if you make a virtual list, be sure to have a physical copy as well. Also, add coverage to your plan if you’ve recently added on to your house or received something particularly.
